An easy 1-2-3 step for Heavy Bags and Sags!

1  Fill in the eyebrows. A defined arch frames the eyes and draws attention away from droopy eyelids

2  Draw eyeliner on the upper eyelid, if there is room. Start from the middle and working it to the edge the eyelid. Or a triangle of brown powdered eyeshadow blended upward into the crease.

3  Eyeliner along the inner rim of the lower lashes helps draw attention upward and away from loose skin or puffs. Navy, dark brown or teal make eyes pop.

Frankly, very heavy bags and sags
and loose skin are hard to camouflage. Basic cosmetic concealing options and techniques do not work for
this problem. Today, advances
in cosmetic surgery make it a realistic option for unloading truly serious heavy bags and sags, eye baggage.

However, if surgery is not an option – it’s best to shift the focus from the problem by concentrating on eye makeup and highlighting lips and cheeks.

After all makeup is applied, there is one more step you can do that will visually give an “instant face lift” while further distracting from saggy eyes.

Using either a pinky peach blush or in an emergency, a dab of lipstick, place color dots in strategic places.

Don’t leave the dot, that is only for placement. Blend the color in using a circular motion leaving just a hint of color. See how it creates an illusion that the face looks lifted.

Finish the look with luscious lips to help Shift the Focus.

This technique helps focus on the eyes only, not the bags and sags.

So… you may not need a facelift, simply a color lift! 😉

Color Balance, personal feature.

My cosmetic dilemma is caused by a hormone imbalance which shows itself with facial hair and dark inflamed spots around my chin. I have been dealing with this since I was 16 years old. Neither waxing nor prescription medication for hair removal have been effective.

I just completed my children’s book on safety, entitled “Saved by the Whistle” and it was heading to the printer. I wanted to look my best for the cover photo shoot without too much “retouching”, but needed help to balance the color of my skin.

Women with darker skin tones often need color balancing. It is a common problem I share with my friends. We have found intense golden, orange tones work best for brightening ebony skin.

I contacted Judith August Cosmetics to discover ways to soften the look of this condition. After receiving products and a personalized profile all I can say is: “Wow! Thank you! Your makeup makes me feel pretty and by the end of the day it pours on self-esteem like you can’t believe!”

Here are the top tips and tricks our personal feature, Sonia, used…

Sonia did her own makeup with stunning results.Using effective products from both her makeup bag and ours, she shares her step by step procedure. #protip Always cleanse, tone and moisturize.

1 To color balance, I applied a deep peachy orange with a touch of yellow “neutralizing foundation” on my entire face. I let it set for two minutes before blending. This helped the dark circles under my eyes and removed yellow discoloration on my face, creating an even and brighter palate to work from. I considered this step my “underbase”.

2 Needing additional coverage on the dark inflamed spots around my chin and other parts of my face, I went for the more intense Total Blockout Makeup over the neutralizing foundation, gently applying with a sponge on the dark spots, remembering to include my neckline and chest area.

3 To make my nose appear thinner, I applied The Everything Pencil in Cinnamon, a shade darker than my skin, contouring the sides and around the nostrils. I used a makeup sponge to blend. 

4 With a powder puff, I applied deep beige finishing powder, allowing it to set for another 2 minutes before dusting off the excess with a powder brush. 

5 I finished off with color makeup, eyes and lips, adding a light bronze powder highlighter to my cheeks and forehead which made the whole look “pop like popcorn”. Just what I needed for my photo session!

Little lessons for Big Pretty Eyes

Under-eye bags challenges come in a myriad of forms.👀

For example, dark circles, eye bags and puffs below your eyes, sagging or droopy skin around and above the eye area, discolorations, a bluish cast, scaly and red or sometimes a yellow pallor. Any, and all of these situations make you look haggard and tired under those pretty “baby blues”!

In this collection of “little lessons” you will learn that each situation and different type of eye bags requires a different type of product, color and technique. Some of these solutions are quick, no-brainer fixes; others may need another step or two.

Few people are blessed with no under-eye puffiness or minimal under-eye discoloration. If you have no puffiness or eye bags, eye cream and light foundation may be all that’s necessary for your eye bags area. Lucky you! For the rest of us…trial and error is the best way to find the colors and product consistency that really work for you and bring that I-just-vacationed-in-Bali appearance. 😉

We’ve all got baggage… (and we don’t mean Vuitton!) 👜

However, “eye baggage” in the form of eye puffs, often caused by water retention, allergies, sinus, too much sleep, or you may have actual bags, most commonly caused by a deposit of fat that settles right under the eye – the correct concealer and technique can make a difference.

here’s how…and what!

Concealing light puffs or eye bags.

STEP 1 – Mix your concealers together, if needed, to achieve a perfect skin match.

STEP 2 – Pat and blend lightly starting at the outside of the eye and move inward.

#protip Don’t forget to apply concealer at the inner corner of your eye, typically the darkest area. Apply an extra layer of concealer on top of the foundation to give an added boost if needed.

STEP 3 – Powder using an eye shadow brush to reduce shine and to keep concealer in place. The shape of this brush fits perfectly under the eye area.

#protip Desperate measure for de-puffing: You can resort to the makeup artist’s trick of using a very tiny touch of hemorrhoid cream to temporarily reduce under-eye swelling and eye bags.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION: Please only do this if you are in a state of desperation. It really works, but shouldn’t be done often.

Paint those Wrinkle Lines Away! 🎨👏🏼

Soften Fine Wrinkle Lines, Lip Wrinkle Lines & Marionette Wrinkle Lines with Vicki’s Angel 😇

Whether it was in front of the camera, or everyday wear, for years, I have utilized a technique that helps softens fine wrinkle lines and adds dimension to the face. It has always been one of my indispensable makeup tricks.

I was delighted to find another guru, Vicki Fischer, who actually put a name to this simple, effective technique… Vicki’s Angel.

As a makeup artist, Vicki Fischer’s highlighting technique reminded her of an angel. She thought “makeup application should be fun!”, so she started telling her clients that she was “lightening their face with a kiss from an angel” thus “Vicki’s Angel” came to be.

In order to give your face a “heavenly luminescence”, Vicki’s Angel both softens and lightens your appearance at the same time; helping to create the illusion of smoother skin. Tiny lip, frown and marionette lines, any kind of wrinkle lines, all respond well to this technique. The Angel adds softness and dimension.

Use Vicky’s Angel to soften fine wrinkle lines!

It is a fun and easy way to remember a very important part of the makeup process. You will actually require less make up by drawing an angel on your own face and it will extend the life of your makeup.

  • Step 1: Paint on your Angel ➡ Use a concealer color one shade lighter than your foundation. Apply with a small camouflage brush, eyeliner brush, or The Everything Pencil. Hold the skin taut and fill in the lines with the tip of your pencil or brush. Be sure to press firmly into the lines as the concealer works like a filler. Think of it as putty.
  • Step 2: Blend ➡ Take your middle finger and press in the concealer then feather out until it’s barely there. You will find that your fingers are great tools for blending your Angel.
  • Step 3: Foundation ➡ Carefully apply a thin layer of foundation over your entire face. Make sure you do not erase your angel. Let the illumination shine through.
  • Step 4: Powder ➡ Apply loose translucent powder to set your makeup and eliminate shine using powder brush or puff. You will see how your angel lifts, lightens, and softens the lines on your face. 😍

Are you a Powder Puff?💨

#protip ✿ A velour powder puff is the best to set camouflage makeup. A light dusting with a powder brush will not do the trick.

⬇Here you go!⬇

✰1 Sprinkle powder onto a puff and fold in half.

Rub the sides together to work the powder into the puff.

The powder should be immersed in the puff instead of just being on the surface. It will kinda look like a taco!

✰2 Gently press the powder onto your face. Apply in three sections. First, on your forehead. Second, do the right side of your face, then the left.

Don’t forget to powder your eyelids and powder carefully under your eyes. Lipstick stays on longer if you powder first.

If you overly powder, use a fine mist of mineral water spray over your entire face and let it dry for a nice glistening finish.

The “Warm Hand” Technique 🙌🏻

After all your makeup has been applied, rub your hands together to get them very warm. Press your warm hands all over your face; in the T-zone, under your eyes and cheeks. The oil and heat from your hands take away the powdery look, leaving your makeup looking fresh and natural.

Silicone based primer is an ultra-lightweight sheer liquid or crème that glides over the skin, leaving a smooth, flawless look and feel. It visually helps “fill in” fine lines and large pores temporarily, and prepares the skin for foundation. Consider it “insurance” for longer lasting, smooth, professional looking makeup.

into their primer products which helps correct some color imperfections of the skin as well as goodies, such as Hyraluronic Acid, and Peptide Complexes and other state-of-the-art ingredients.

Before you get into the art of makeup, prepare that beautiful canvas…

First thing in the morning – reality hits…we need coffee! ☕️

• Cleanser, toner, sunscreen, moisturizer, eye cream, primer, foundation… whew!

• You need to wait a minute between each step because it is necessary for the skin to absorb the products so they can work together properly… needless to say, that’s a lot of Zen time in the morning. 🧘🏻‍♀️

• Make sure to remove any excess hair through depilatory, waxing, tweezing, or threading on a bi-monthly basis. 💆🏻‍♀️

• Concentrate on keeping eyebrows well groomed because they are the frames of your face.

• Keep a pair of tweezers in your car, while not advocating this while driving; it can be shockingly handy at a stoplight! The lighting is fabulous and it is the only way to really see all the stray hairs. Scary but true! 😱

If you buy quality brushes and care for them, they will last many years. Bacteria lurks everywhere, so it is necessary to clean, condition and sanitize your brushes, and powder puffs every

• Each kind of makeup including foundation, concealer, neutralizer/corrector, and camouflage has a distinct texture, covering ability and purpose. 

• All of them conceal to a degree depending on what you want to hide or cover. Selecting the right concealer type and shade for your particular “challenge” and learning how to apply correctly really isn’t tricky once you know a little about each of them.

Terms of Concealment 👩🏻‍💼 (Let’s talk concealing and camouflaging)

FOUNDATION is the most basic makeup, and by nature generally lighter in consistency and coverage than dedicated concealers. Foundation is available in jars, tubes and compacts. A skin matched foundation may be all you need to even out your skin tone, conceal minor discolorations, or cover up a simple flaw 

or blemish. Choose a foundation formulated for your skin type; moisturizing for dry and non-oily for everyone else. 

CONCEALER makeup is thicker in consistency, more opaque than foundation and better for actually concealing. It comes in a wide range of skin shades and can be found in tubes, compacts, roll- up sticks and pencils. Concealer should smooth on easily and not be too thick, dry, cakey or goopy. 

COLOR NEUTRALIZER also called corrector, not a natural skin shade but rather a pale color – like peach, rose, green yellow and lavender. It’s meant to be used under or mixed with foundation or moisturizer. Neutralizers act as a kind of “insurance policy”
to block out unwanted discoloration that might show through makeup during the day. A neutralizer is an excellent base for covering extremely dark circles, bruising and for blocking redness. 

TRUE CAMOUFLAGE MAKEUP is different – it’s more opaque, by using more pigment, and much heavier in consistency than a foundation or concealer. It also comes in a range of skin-tone shades. Because of its thicker consistency, camouflage makeup is not normally suitable for the eye area. Use only where it’s needed. It’s serious coverage. 

TINTED MOISTURIZERS are perfect for those who need just a little neutralizing or simply want a veil of color without makeup. 

LIGHT-REFLECTIVE FORMULAS Today, the newest concealers boasts light-reflecting ingredients. These products rely less on heavy pigments and more on micronized mica quartz, pearl and titanium dioxide which all have light reflecting qualities. They’re also thinner in consistency than traditional concealer formulas. In the opinion of many makeup artists this kind of concealer is good for minor problems, but tends to be less effective for very dark or discolored areas. 

MINERAL MAKEUP A story of its own. It all started in the 70s; I had the privilege of being involved with the first Mineral Makeup; a cosmetic called “Indian Earth” where I was the training director for people demonstrating the product. They learned from me, and in turn taught the public, “The Art of Mineral Makeup”. This type of product was never seen before and became a huge success. 

Fast forward 30 years and minerals are mainstream, highly marketed and categorized as “makeup that is good for your skin”. True “Mineral Makeup” is a natural resource from the earth, finely ground without chemicals, dyes and preservatives. It contains titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide, which provide “natural sun blocks, plus mica which gives shine. 

“Today, you want to be aware that many products are fortified with other ingredients which are not true minerals,” says the creator, Diane Ranger. “Make sure to look at the ingredients and choose carefully. While some love this type of makeup, others note that it dries out the skin and accentuates wrinkles. Try it and see if it works for you.”

In those days, it was an innovation to have a concealer, in a pencil form, under a brand name. All these years later, I have designed many more specialty products to help with any, and all, of your concealer needs from simple annoying flaws to serious coverage.

I’m running around in circles trying to cover up my very dark circles. Not only dark, but during allergy season, red irritation comes through and I’m a mess!

To make matters worse, my natural skin tone is very light and trying to find a concealer that addresses all of these issues is almost impossible!

The product is light green, aqua, and is designed to be a neutralizer you can wear under your concealer of foundation.  It literally erases the intensity of the dark circle by providing a diffused color to build the rest of my makeup on.  It’s a brilliant concept for those of us with light skin who need extra help.

Green and yellow are the colors in the color spectrum that neutralize red.  However, with my milky white skin, if I used yellow, it would be simply, yellow…YUCK!  Green is a cooler color just like my light skin so it is perfect.

It is also very easy to use.  Once my moisturizer has had a minute to set, I kindly pat AquaTint from the bottom of the circle, right across the eyelid and lightly to under the brow.  I’m also very red around my nose and under my chin so I use it there as well.  Once in place, I wait another minute and then cover the green with my normal concealer allowing another minute before adding foundation, blush and lipstick.

Why wait a minute between steps?  Judith August reveals in her recent book, “Gotcha Covered – The Compact Guide To Camouflage Makeup”, that when you let any cream product set a minute before blending in, air hits the product, and the product itself coagulates and grabs onto the skin, therefore providing better coverage and staying power.  Who knew?

All these little tricks make me feel better and look better allowing me to face my day.  No worries!  Isn’t that what makeup is for?  I Love This Stuff!

The skilled surgeons create natural looking breast using fat from the tummy or buttocks. In the process, patients receive a bit of a “tummy tuck” or “buttocks-lift, which is an extra perk because this is where the fat comes from. There are scars of course, but as they fade, camouflage makeup corrects and covers and helps the patient feel beautiful in no time.

This center and its treatments are a far cry from what use to be in the beginning of “Breast Cancer Awareness” in this country. As I mentioned above, I lived in New Orleans in the 70’s. Everything about the subject of breast cancer was very “hush, hush” in those days. Then, there was a national television program on PBS called “WHY ME”, which was narrated by the actress Lee Grant. This special opened up much dialogue about Breast Cancer and its realities and hopes for the future. Breast reconstruction was not well known at the time and very few went through it.

I had the honor of being chosen as the moderator on this special. My job was to field the phone calls from the viewing audience to the expert on the panel that could answer that particular question. It was one of the most worthwhile public service jobs I ever had. For me, it was one more step in realizing how important the role in corrective cosmetics can have on society and pushed me further into my future work.

7 Beauty Routines We Don’t Recommend

Discovering unique beauty secrets that work magic for you is one of the nicer aspects of being a woman. I, like many of many us especially love finding simple beauty routines that involve natural, everyday ingredients. But, I have to say, some beauty tricks my friends have shared with me over the years seem to border on the bizarre.

Here I’ve listed the Top 7 strangest ones ever brought to my attention. This is not to say they don’t work, at least for these women. I’ve got to wonder, though, how they came up with the idea to try them in the first place!

  1. A charming professional woman I know swears by Boraxo, the powdered industrial hand cleaner, as a facial cleanser. She says its granular texture has a light exfoliating property that leaves her skin dewy and squeaky clean. I’d say anyone who wants to try it might want to test it first on a small patch of skin…
  2. Another friend who tends to develop dry, scaly areas on her face uses Scotch tape to remove the shedding skin. She applies it with light pressure to the flaky patch, and then gently pulls it off. According to her, you can see how effectively it takes care of peeling skin by checking out what’s stuck to the tape afterward. I think I’d be afraid to look…
  3. For taming brows, there’s stroking a dab of Chap Stick lip balm before filling in with your eyebrow pencil. I’ve also read that movie stars use a touch of lip balm on the inner corner of the eyes as a highlighter. Really? Maybe in a pinch…not too bizarre.
  4. To hide blemishes, a touch of nasal spray combined with redness reducing eye drops is supposed to reduce the inflammation, making them nearly invisible. (Here’s where I have to tout our very own EraseZit Pencil.I feel confident this does a better job, without exposing your lovely skin to a chemistry experiment!)
  5. Here’s a good one: Who knew Pepto Bismol makes a great facial mask? Apparently, the active ingredient, bismuth subsalicylate, is an antibacterial agent that shrinks pores and dries blemishes. (This beauty method also gives new meaning to the phrase “pretty in pink.”)
  6. Having a long day at work, your oily skin breaking through your makeup, and no time to retouch? Try tearing a piece from a tissue toilet seat cover, found in every ladies’ room, to absorb the shine. It probably works, but really, who thought of this!
  7. Probably the most economical beauty secret of all is cutting a potato in half, then, rubbing it on the skin to help fade scars. Potato juice is supposed to be fairly effective, and it’s certainly harmless to try. Especially since the latest in scar creams are tremendously expensive. But…

How to Have Flawless Legs: Say Goodbye to Spider Veins!

Summer will be here before you know it, and that means flirty sundresses and a lot more skin on display, especially legs. Every year at this time, I start worrying whether my legs are worse than the year before. Are they too pasty? Did a tiny crop of spider veins appear over the winter?

I must confess that I created Invisible Stockings years ago for my own less-than-perfect legs. After months of getting the color and consistency right, I shared my “magic potion” with you. Soon I’ll be taking two or three bottles out of stock so I’ll be covered this summer because, thankfully, you all will take the rest! I’m so pleased you like it as much as I do!

We’ve embraced the trend of bare-legs-and-seductive-heels since the heyday of Sex and the City. Office wear has gotten a lot more relaxed, too. Besides, who ever enjoyed putting on nylons or dealing with the inevitable runs?

The trouble is, we still want those beautiful showgirl legs and that youthful, sun-kissed look. Bronzers and tanning products have gotten better—less orange and streaky– but most don’t provide extra coverage to hide the veins and superficial flaws we’re not fond of. Facial Exfoliation: Too Much of a Good Thing?

Spring is in the air, a season for new beginnings! In the world of beauty and cosmetics, one tried-and-true way for a fresh new start is exfoliation. Regularly removing dead layers of facial skin gives your concealing products and makeup a smooth “canvas” to work on. Plus, younger, fresher skin is hiding just below that dull-looking layer on top. (Have you noticed that sloughing off the old skin cells gives your face a healthy glow like nothing else?) Think of it as spring cleaning for your face.

Still, I’ve always wondered: If a little exfoliation is a good thing, is more even better?

Recently I came across an article that discussed whether it’s possible to over-exfoliate the skin—to slough off the outer later of cells so often that the skin cells no longer reproduce. That’s a pretty scary prospect. Before tossing out your facial scrubs, though, keep reading, gals!

Many dermatologists recommend that you gently exfoliate no more than once or twice a week. Why? The top “horny” layer of your skin does have useful functions. One of them is protecting the fresh skin below from harmful UV rays. In addition, rough and frequent exfoliation can damage the newer skin cells. Sometimes it takes awhile to find the right exfoliating products (and frequency of use) that will be best for your own skin.

Popular options include facial scrubs with salt or sugar granules, or hydroxy acids, which chemically slough off the old skin. More extensive treatments include dermabrasion and chemical peels, done in a dermatologist’s office. Most of the time, trial and error helps us to find what’s best for our unique skin type.

But—what about over-exfoliating? If we exfoliate too often, can we run out of new skin cells? The article I read explained that cells do only replicate themselves a limited number of times. (Normally, the differentiated cells in the human body can only divide about 50 times.) Does that mean that the more we exfoliate, the faster we’ll use up our skin cells?

Thank goodness, it doesn’t! And here’s why: Something called “The Hayflick Principle” determines the life span of only a certain kind of cells– “differentiated” (specialized) cells. Each time a differentiated cell replicates, it loses a tiny piece of its DNA chain. Eventually, the chain gets so short that the cell can no longer reproduce.

Of course, this would be a very bad thing, if we were sloughing off differentiated cells that could never be replaced.

Fortunately, your skin consists of two types of cells. The deepest layer of the skin is able to produce a second type of cell, a “stem” cell, which can produce more differentiated cells and more stem cells. Every 35 days, you’ll have a beautiful “new” layer of skin. (This explains why you can never “wear out” your fingerprints!) We never need to worry about running out of skin cells.

Top Ten Tips for a Gorgeous “Selfie”

Hate how you look in “selfies?” Don’t panic. We’ve discovered ten expert tips for taking a great selfie. In fact, we’ve got the inside scoop on how to look absolutely stunning in your smartphone photos. After all, our mission at Judith August Cosmetics is to help you put your best face forward in every situation. It’s all about knowing the right techniques.

We first realized that unflattering selfies were a hot topic when we heard on the news that plastic surgery is dramatically on the rise, all because people are horrified at how they look in their cell phone photos. Even worse, maybe you’ve already made an appointment yourself. Yikes! But you don’t really need to fear selfies anymore. Breathe a sigh of relief, and cancel that nose job consultation.

Many of us don’t like how we look in any photo. But selfies are truly the worst. There’s a good reason for that. Cell phone lenses simply are not designed for close-ups. They’re made for wide-angle shots of landscapes or groups of people. (If you’ve ever been in a large group photo standing near the edge of the frame, you may have noticed you look about twice as wide as you do in real life. That, my dear, is the lens distortion, and NOT you.) In a selfie, the lens distortion is enhanced because the camera is so close to the subject. You don’t look like that.

Fortunately, we’ve rounded up the hottest tips from experts for improving your odds of looking better when you take your self-portrait. Read on, and get ready for your close-up!

  1. Look for diffused lighting. Car interiors are great. Why? Because light is streaming in from windows all around you, lessening harsh shadows. Try experimenting in rooms with big windows. Sometimes being backlit by a large window produces soft, natural light on the face. In some cases, facing the window will erase all traces of shadow and make you look flawless. Try everything!
  2. Experiment with head angles, rather than photographing yourself straight on. Take lots of pictures to find the best angle for your features. At the same time, you can double check hair and makeup.
  3. Shoot from a camera angle slightly above your eye level. Lower angles produce the illusion of extra chins. Unless, of course, you want to make your chin bigger.
  4. Use the zoom feature to tighten up and compress the image a bit. This removes some of the distortion.
  5. Use apps for post-production to change the exposure or filter the image. These include Snapseed and Camera +. With Instagram, you can use flattering filters.
  6. Smile a lot. It feels silly, but serious selfies often are not very natural looking.
  7. If you have dark circles under your eyes, lift your chin. (For the ultimate remedy, of course, you can always count on Judith August Cosmetics for the best concealer products.

The Kindness of Strangers

My first experience developing “The Everything Pencil ™ Face and Body Concealer was due to a desire I had to help strangers who were facing skin issues. As a “Post Operative” makeup consultant for cosmetic surgeons in Beverly Hills, I was tasked with teaching women who had experienced everything from elective surgery to car accidents and burns on how to develop a “whole again” look through the application of corrective cosmetics.

In 1986, the beginning of it all, I needed a quick, effective product that was portable and easy to manage. I scoured the beauty supply places in order to find “just the right” tool. The sales girl, a complete stranger, took me way in the back and sitting on the shelf, showed me an unmarked pencil that was filled with cosmetic concealer. I was immediately intrigued by the simplicity of the idea “A pencil…of course! That’s it!” I then set out to find more about this little incognito pencil with nothing more than “Made in Germany” printed on the side.

Finding the company in Germany, strangers answered the phone and were delighted that the little pencil was so right for my needs. In no time at all the people who were strangers at the lab across the world introduced me to a sister lab here in the U.S.A. where we soon became business associates and friends. They agreed to create a concealer pencil with ingredients and texture to my specifications. “What do you want to call the pencil?” they asked? “Well, it covers up and conceals absolutely everything so why don’t we call it “The Everything Pencil ™ Face and Body Concealer”. And so this little incognito pencil became the first true product in our line of cosmetics specializing the art of camouflage makeup

A dear friend, was once a stranger, gifted me with the Judith August logo, (believe me, my handwriting looks NOTHING like that) and one more piece of my business puzzle was put in place. I was helping strangers and strangers were helping me.

One evening, walking out of a party, I passed a woman who looked at me and said “I have to know you!” She was a complete stranger but I liked her immediately. Trading numbers, she found me at the coffee shop a month later with a stack of papers strewn on the table and a perplexed look on my face. What I had before me was the first writings from “Gotcha Covered, the Compact Guide to Camouflage Makeup”. “The Stranger” turned out to be a writer… Heaven! Three years later through a thousand cups of coffee, a lot of laughs and a whole lot of rewrites… the book was born. And where a stranger once stood, a solid friendship was realized.

Was it the person next to you at the stoplight letting your know your right front tire was low? The teenager at the grocery store who saw you struggling with the big bag of kitty litter and placed it into your trunk for you? Perhaps it was the woman at the bank who ran to give you the debit card you inadvertently left in the ATM machine. Strangers showing a bit of kindness in the world make our day.

“I have always depended on the kindness of strangers” to spread the word about my products and frankly, they have never let me down. In the daunting business called “cosmetics” I continue to thrive and I am grateful for each and every experience I have bringing me from stranger to friend. Women Who Inspire: Camille Duskin, Gateway Arts Foundation

Women, who inspire me, are the women who take the time to inspire others. Camille Duskin of Las Vegas, Gateway Arts Foundation is just such a person. Over the last few years, she combined mature performance artists together with youthful artists in a successful mentoring/scholarship program to develop the young master to greatness.

Gateway Arts Foundation scholarship recipients range from music to dance, spoken word to novelist and she recently won the Las Vegas Mayor’s award for Philanthropist of the year. While she is small in stature, she is big in humanity and drive. Every month she features magnificent artists, new works and shows of every variety. While the lineup of performers that want to work with her is growing by the day and hopeful scholarships nominees are starting to come in from across the nation; she believes that Las Vegas has enough talent and to consider anyone else is not necessary at this time.

Camille grew up in an environment where celebrities from across the globe, would gather around her family grand piano and spend the evening singing the songs of her uncle Harold Adamson, a huge talent that wrote for MGM Studios at the height of the “Hollywood Musical” era. Camille’s beloved mother “Hattie” was also a great supporter of the arts and when she died, her home in Vegas was turned into a performance house that holds small concerts to support Gateway. Many venues in town welcome Camille and her foundation as she has gained both the reputation and the audience to support her widely growing organization.

Fearless in her approach and love of both the artist and the many art forms that possess the stage; Camille is also tireless in her faith and knowledge that the arts are necessary for the positive growth of Las Vegas as a whole. She truly believes that funding artists is the only way to bring brilliance to the surface allowing them to shine.

Funny how life is a simple twist of fate, while Judith August Cosmetics covers minor flaws, Camille Duskin at Gateway Arts Foundation uncovers minor flaws and in essence, through self discovery, we both strive to build self esteem and create splendor. THE NEW PILGRIMAGE

As Americans, Thanksgiving is our day to pay homage to the wonderful life we lead. We travel miles to find home. We hug and hold the people that we dearly miss and we feed complete strangers because we have more than enough to share. In line at Best Buy or the soup kitchen or in our private homes, personal pilgrimage allows us all to journey to the shrine of friends and family, TV’s and new memories for the very best reasons of all… the sentimental ones.

Pilgrimage:

1: a journey to a shrine or other sacred place

2: a journey or long search made for exalted or sentimental reasons

Back in the day, the Pilgrims made their way to America, to live a better life and celebrated Thanksgiving with complete strangers who welcomed them in. These days, my son makes his way to Best Buy to get a cheap TV and celebrates Thanksgiving with the complete strangers waiting in line who welcome him in.

When I asked if I should bring food, he said, “God NO! I have so many people bringing me plates of Thanksgiving dinner that I will be like a soup kitchen!” He is thankful for the opportunity to have a night of camaraderie with complete strangers and loves the whole challenge of being in the front of the line to get the TV.

I know that he faces this night with good humor and a lot of laughter. The same applies to all of us who make the yearly pilgrimage to celebrate love, life, delicious food and an afternoon of friends, family and football.

As Americans, Thanksgiving is our day to pay homage to the wonderful life we lead. We travel miles to find home. This choice is not to be neglected or taken lightly. As Women, we need to take our time and test several products to decide which one will suit our body chemistry and skin type.

What happened to just finding a color I like and slapping it on?

Let me help you learn just what foundation is actually for and how to apply it for the most effective results… And as a reminder, “Mon Cher” … NO SLAPPING… “Pat and blend” is my motto.

Foundation is such an essential beauty product; like a cherished companion, once we find it, we are friends forever! Designed to be “mostly invisible”, it allows the skin to appear re-texturized; smoothing wrinkles and correcting imperfections. With so many different skin types, selection requires attention for every age from younger consumers’ right through our senior years.

“Again with the skin types?”

“Yes, my friend, each skin has a type; dry, oily or combination. Sometimes you have an issue like Rosacea, Vitiligo, Acne… stuff like that. Your foundation and concealer are the products that create an artist pallet for all of the wonderful eye shadows and blush colors you use to compliment your daily look.”

Essentially, you need to know about each type of makeup; Foundation, Concealer, Neutralizer, Corrector Camouflage, and what they do. How different skin types and skin issues will react to each product, and just what those funny lavender, pink and green shades are for. Knowledge is power and educating yourself before you dive into the cosmetic section of the internet or cosmetic counter at the mall, can save hours of time, a great deal of money and what could become a massive headache.

The O Word

It was my birthday last month and my darling friends took me for lunch and as we are all “living” in the second half of our century, we boo-hoo’ed all the hateful words associated with the word old…”Older, is a much better word than the word old”, I said, “There is a marked difference in intent and attitude.”

The Thesaurus describes the “O” word as, aged, mature, elderly, cantankerous, prehistoric, primeval, archaic, outdated, obsolete… all terms that have no relationship to the way I feel every day. I am still 36 in my mind, although certain parts of my anatomy don’t react in the same delightful way. (Who knew that peppers and sausage for breakfast would stricken off the list of food to eat?) Bottom line, while I refuse to be stuck in the world of “Old” I can handle the world of “older.”

Looking around me, my friends do their best to stay in shape; walking dogs, water aerobics, pilates, and still many of us have more doctors appointments than ever…does that mean we have to get Old? “Good Heaven’s NO!” My friend Barbara just ran a 5K marathon at 80-ish and wondered why she was so tired at the end of the run.

Remember when you were 5 and your 28 year old mother was “old” and God knows as a teenager, you could never imagine sex at 60. Getting older is all relative. Aging can affect us in incredible ways, the bad and the good; fortunately with today’s modern products and techniques, our bad habits don’t have to show.

Over time as I watched the changes on my own face. Through my business I am fortunate to work with chemists and colorists designing camouflage makeup that works for me and everyone else. I love creating wonderful products that give us a fresh, young appearance, covers age spots and dark circles; filling in wrinkles, allowing us to look amazing right through the elegant years:(Notice I didn’t use the “O” word?).

I would love to spearhead other phrases for getting older…any suggestions? Lets hear from you, who knows, perhaps a movement for the wiser, the graceful and the stylish’ will be put into place. I have a good friend that compares aging to the feline world. Babies are kittens, 20s are kitties, 30s are cats, 40s are cougars, 50’s-70’s lioness, 80’s the sphinx (The wise one who simply looks back upon history with candor and interest). We can also change the dynamics of the word by simply adding a few letters:

“Old becomes Gold with Untold tales of adventure and Bold stories of glory and wonder.”

Life is longer than ever…enjoy,live,love,hug and pass along wisdom. Be young in your mind. We still have a lot to do…there’s still time… Like I have always said…old is someone else! It’s just another “O” word!

Six Whole days of a makeup free face! Yippee!

No makeup for me! I’m not going to cover up any age spots, sunspots or dark under eye circles-not worrying about wrinkles, lines or an occasional zit! I’m on vacation; bare faced and carefree on the California coast! Of course I’m hiding all of the above with behind a fabulous pair of oversized sunglasses yielding only to my new coral pink lipstick and hot pink lip liner. Sooo California!

My husband and I are on a six-day road trip up the coast. But, to tell you the truth, we may not get further than Santa Barbara. It has always been one of our favorite spots and after staying for two nights we couldn’t leave our most cherished hotel in the area, The Upham Hotel, a beautiful charming and peaceful hotel that kept calling to us—Stay, Stay. So we decided to go no further and vegged out in this tranquil atmosphere of beauty and sunshine. I had plenty of down time to contemplate on all of your comments from the survey we sent to you weeks ago.

A big THANK YOU! To all of you who participated in the Judith August Cosmetic Solutions survey. The positive feedback was valuable and the suggestions we take very seriously. However, according to the responses, “more of the same” is a good thing. I guess we just keep doing what we are doing. Yeah!

On a personal note, it truly brings tears to my eyes. I have been involved with cosmetics my entire life; first through modeling in front of the camera and then as the training director of Aida Grey Cosmetics in Beverly Hills. For those of you who don’t remember this brilliant matriarch of the industry, she was THE Estee Lauder of Beverly Hills and my mentor in the world of cosmetics.

In between, I was fortunate to live in New Orleans and open the very first “make-over” cosmetic boutique in the entire south. “Let’s Face It” featured Aida Grey Cosmetics, Revlon, Lancôme and many others.

We even had a line for children called “Once Upon an Apple”, I loved that company. It was shampoos and body products for kids. This along with perfumes, accessories and essential oils made us the “place to be” to have your makeup done for proms, weddings, and southern balls that were the staple of living in “The Big Easy”.

HOW I BUILT MY COSMETIC COMPANY

Years later, returning to Los Angeles, the place of my birth, I created, “The Everything Pencil ™, face and body concealer, through my work with plastic surgeons in the area. I was the makeup guru in post operative cosmetics, and got lucky when Allure Magazine wrote about my work and chose the pencil as “Editor’s Choice” of the month. With the overwhelming response… a business was born.

From there, my goal became to help people with products that covered, concealed and camouflaged just about everything because at that point I realized, “Everybody’s got something to hide”.

Wow, so much time has gone by and with the help of wonderful pharmaceutical talent and the best laboratories America has to offer, I have added a full line to Judith August Cosmetic Solutions in order to help you with your personal needs. When was the last time you took your children- or-grandchildren “Back to School” Supply Shopping?

Well, the only pencil I have thought about for many years are The Everything Pencil™- Face and Body Concealer and its sister, The Erasezit™ Antiseptic Concealer.
I happen to be in New York last week where two of my grandchildren live, and I offered to take them “Back to School Supply Shopping” at Staples. They used to be very small and back to “preschool” was a different shopping spree all together, but that was a minute ago… What a different ball game now that they are taller, older and entering 1st and 5th grade! Frankly it would have been more fun shopping at Nordstrom’s, but here we are on our shopping spree in the land of all types of school supplies and accessories. What a mind-blowing experience! What happened to the “Ole School Days,” when the school system provided supplies to the students? Today, I had two little ones walk into Staples with me and mile long lists of school supply “necessities” that were never “necessities” when we were growing up.

Talk about Pencils! Who knew there are 12 different types of pens and pencils, 10 different colored folders, 6 different types of notebooks they both needed and on and on and on. You know what I mean?

The sales person who helped us was sympathizing with me all the way. He too is the grandfather of 2 small boys and can’t get over what it takes to “go back to school.” “In our day”… was the beginning words between the two of us every time I reached for another item. Task ,Tisk, Tisk we lamented as I secured and fought for the last Incredible Hulk hard drive disk. Now to find a lanyard to match the disk…that’s another shopping day all together.

I got back to the house with 6 oversized shopping bags full of “supplies for two” and felt exhausted, overwhelmed and totally broke.

As much as I adore those fabtabulous children the only pencil I want to see now is the one in my cosmetic drawer.

Top 5 Products in My Makeup Bag

Back in “the day” you could find at least five lipsticks, six eye shadows, several lip and eye pencils, mascara, eyelash curler, lip balms, brow color, brow wax, and more in my bag!

Today I can truly confess I don’t have tons of items I use on a daily basis I have simplified!!!

It may be a shock to some that since I’ve been in the cosmetic industry all my adult life and I’m considered a cosmetic guru, that this fact of simplifying is totally bizarre for one such as myself. I confess that I live with so few makeup products…except for concealers which I have many…the ones I create and the one’s I’m constantly researching.

It all started one morning, many years ago, when I was in San Francisco and realized I had left my makeup bag at home. Panic set in! I had a very important business meeting and needed to look my best. No excuses and voila..no makeup bag to be found!

I scrambled through my purse and laid out the four cosmetic items I had with me. The Everything Pencil™ in two colors (pure beige and cinnamon) ,mascara and one lipstick!

I had just created the Everything Pencil and thank goodness for that! I used it everywhere; as a concealer, (of course) and covered up all the spots, freckles and red veins on my face.

I used it as a highlighter under my brows and colored out the discolorization on my eyelids.

My lipstick became my blush, adding a touch of color on the “apple of my cheeks.” I also swiped a bit of same lipstick on the outer corner of my eyelids…it became an eye shadow. Pretty clever, yes?

Then I took The Everything Pencil in the color cinnamon and deepened the crease above my eyelid and then the same color as a lip liner and cheek contour…to tell you the truth I used it as a brow color too.

Mascara is always a blessing. Today Laura Merciers is my favorite because I love the brush that makes the lashes so natural looking and with its tiny tip it doubles as an eyeliner. I add little eyeliner dots in between my eyelashes, top and bottom to give a darker, more dramatic look. I must say I “cleaned up” pretty well.

Since that day I found out how creative I could be with simply four products, which I continue to do. I use one foundation (My Fabulous Finish which is simply fab!) And one lipstick that I found over the years is just the perfect color. A different lip liner can always change the look of the lipstick but the base color is always the same. Once you find perfection, stick with it. Clinique has wonderful lip liners and they really last.

However, if you asked me about my body care products that’s a different story. I’m a sucker for oils and fragrance, which I will share with you on my next post. It’s going to take up lots more space!

I’m excited to introduce Amber Carmen, the founder of Tangled Tantrum™, one of the most simple and effective products for children I’ve seen.

Amber, a local hairstylist and mother of two, developed and launched her product line this year. She is also a fan of Judith August Cosmetics, which she uses everyday to cover up small imperfections and a birthmark that she camouflages daily. She had been working in the industry for years and wasn’t satisfied with hair products for children that were on the market. So she decided to develop her own.

It was a fight every night at bath time to brush out tangles in her children’s hair. Her two kids definitely did not want to use “mom products” so Amber thought that if they had their own that smelled amazing, worked great, and had cool eye catching graphics, then she wouldn’t have to deal with “Tangled Tantrums” every night.

Judith August INVISIBLE STOCKINGS™ “It’s A GAM Thing!”

Long, slim, and fabulous flawless legs have been the prize possession, and a man’s obsession, of many beautiful women throughout the ages. Movie Stars have been known to insure their legs for millions of dollars because of this career enhancing asset.

Silk nylons, of the finest nature, were purchased as trade with Japan where worms labored tirelessly spinning silk for the sake of our beauty.

When world war 11 broke out these itsy bitsy workers continued to weave, but now it was for creating parachutes for Japanese soldiers and spinning for silk stockings went by the wayside.

While DuPont began “nylon stocking”production in 1939; alas…their machines also went into parachute production and women had to look for other ways to create the “stocking clad look”, but without the silk nylons.

In the early 1940’s Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein created their “Liquid Leg Makeup Bars” which popped up in every department store. Even though clever names like “Gentlemen Prefer Bronze” and “Mist of Dawn” showed up on the shelves, application of these products was often an arduous affair.

The pigments were dry and flakey and the fluids often suffered pigmentation separation. Some women went so far as to color their legs with instant gravy. None were “waterproof” (imagine the random rain storm) and the reality of drawing a line up the back of the leg (to pretend silk nylons) was nearly impossible and totally tedious!

What goes around comes around and we fast forward to today. Some say “nylons, what for??? They creep and they run and pull and bunch in all the wrong places!” With the onset of self-tanning and hundreds of “bronzing” liquid potions and lotions women feel free again!

Katherine Phelps is just such a woman.

Thank You Ulta & Smashbox

I was an unsuspecting “Female” visiting the Ulta Cosmetic Store a few weeks ago looking for hairspray for my husband. Walking in, I was blinded by the lights and cameras, there were makeup artists…even hairdressers. The place was jammed with customers who were there for a “Smash Box” cosmetic promotion, all wanting the photographer. A delightful young woman approached me, asking if I would like to participate in the event. I was thrilled and feeling quite giddy at the opportunity to get in front of the camera again….with a new professionally designed makeup. I crave new ideas and love to have the latest palette painted on my canvas.

smash_box_2_5I guess I looked a bit…bewitched, bedraggled and bewildered…as I had just slipped in after a long walk with “Lola the wonder dog” wearing jogging clothes and no makeup. With a new book, “Gotcha Covered, The Compact Guide to Camouflage Makeup” coming put, I was thrilled at the opportunity for a new professional photograph. I said “Great I’d love to!” I ran home, and grabbed a couple of jackets from my closet and ran back. No one would possibly guess that it was only from the waist up. Jeans and sneakers stayed in place but again…who knew? No one would see those old rags…

The makeup artist asked me if I wanted a natural look. “What are you crazy?” I replied. “Pile it on! I intend to look twenty years younger and fabulous!” Once the latest and greatest in primer, camouflage cover up, founsmash_1_5dation, blush, eyeliner, color, mascara, mousse, hairspray, fresh spritz… I entered the photo booth.

Feeling like I was back in the 60’s I experienced the incredible déjà vu of being in front of a really great photographer…

I was instantly transported back into one of the fabulous NY photography studios of my past… this was not the legendary Richard Avendon himself, but the photographer from Smashbox was pretty darn close. Wonderful to work with and with a great eye for lighting.

Isn’t that the beauty of the beauty business…people helping people capture the beauty that lives within and bringing it to the surface? When we look good, we face the daily challenging business of living appearing fresh and confident; it’s one of our most powerful tools for success!

It’s nice that sometimes our lives spin in circles and the pleasures of the past can become pleasures of the present. Good-For-You Foods for a Younger You!

There are lots of healthy foods out there, but there are specific foods that are particularly good for your skin and body when it comes to looking and feeling younger.

  1. Barley. The antioxidants and nutrients in hulled barley can help stabilize blood-sugar levels and insulin. This helps your body retain collagen, which is essential in keeping your skin wrinkle-free!
  2. Fish. Fish that are packed with omega-3s include salmon, tuna, and trout. The essential fats in omega-3’s help keep skin soft and supple.
  3. Broccoli. With naturally-occurring quercetin, broccoli contains natural anti-inflammatory agents, which help slow down the aging process.
  4. Avocados. Load up on the guacamole: The oils in avocado help keep the skin hydrated, thus preventing early signs of wrinkles. (It makes a great natural facial mask, too.)
  5. Carrots and Tomatoes. Veggies like these are full of phytonutrients and antioxidants, both properties that help prevent the harmful effects of free radicals. The lycopene found in tomatoes especially, likewise helps reduce these effects.

WHERE TO GET NAILED!

There I was, visiting my daughter and my adorable grandchildren one morning, on the North Shore of Long Island when I suddenly discovered a few hours of free time. The kids were at school, the house was clean, the dishes done… what to do? What to do? Of course! My favorite “pamper past time”… a Manicure!

“Cotton balls and a fresh shine…What could be better than that?”

The Search was on for “The Best” that main street had to offer… there were seven choices, Joyful Nails, Nail Salon, Quick Nails, Lovely Nails, Cute nails, Paradise Nails, Mantrap Nails and Nails by Linda.

My head was spinning! Suddenly, I thought it would be both great fun and great research to see which one had that “special touch,” extra service, the best color, and the best ambiance… I had seven mornings that held seven cherished hours of free time, and I set out on a “full manni” marathon.

Believe me when I tell you that to take an hour off, from the beloved family and an often hectic pace, it means that the “service” needs to be worth the price, I dearly need to be pampered, praised, adored and looking spectacular at the end of it all. There were many points to consider, the cost of luxury hand holding? Who do the salon’s market themselves to? What makes this salon more special than others? While some specialize in the teeny bopper market, complete with stickers, decals and a different sparkle on every nail, others entice us with “natural products,” meditative music and Organic bliss water…

For me… the best was a quiet little place called “Joyful Nails”… They were passionate about the complete care and concern for my well being and while the honey, sugar lavender oil scrub they applied to my dry, cracked cuticles softened my fingertips, it worked on all of the rest of my senses as well… I am a sucker for scent, knowing that when it is done right, I can drift into memory land and find myself dancing as a child in a field of flowers… well… maybe nothing quite that dramatic, but… what it did remind me of was a wonderful salon in my mother’s neighborhood where I got my first manicure in grade school… (I felt so grown up).

What I truly loved more than any other salon in my world was the beautiful cut crystal bowl that was set by the door, filled with ice water and aromatic fresh rose petals… At the end of a glorious hand massage, and a full nail treatment, the final pampering moment was a 3 minute dip in the magical concoction to “set” the manicure and in doing so, released the effervescence of roses into the air… true heaven.

For me, that has become the point of difference. It is the standard for which I judge all other manicures… interesting that I formulated that truth when I was a young girl. How about you? What is your story?

20 Quick Tips on Concealers, Powder and Foundation

20 quick tips on concealers and foundation

  1. Use a concealer that is one shade lighter on the skin area that you want to highlight.
  2. Use a concealer that is one shade darker on the portion of your skin that you want to hide.
  3. For under-eye concealers, don’t go for liquidy variants. These don’t really provide good coverage. Instead, go for a supple, creamy version like our Orange Masking Crème or a concealer pencil like our Everything Pencil. The skin under eye is drier and thinner than the rest of your face, so it will benefit from the extra hydration.
  4. If your concealer dries or flakes during the day, you can dab some eye cream over it. This will emulsify with the concealer and refresh it.
  5. Do this simple foundation skin tone match test to find out if you’re wearing the right shade: Apply the foundation to the top of your arm, above the wrist. best concealer pencilDon’t apply it on the wrist, as the veins can distort the appearance of the color.
  6. Use your jaw line to test the lightness of your foundation. Allow foundation to dry; it should appear invisible but still make your skin ready for your makeup. If you see a spot or the color, it’s not the right shade for you.
  7. Use a damp sponge for solid-cream foundations. The damp foundation can give you lighter, more even coverage.
  8. Apply your foundation after you’ve applied primer or moisturizer application. Make sure to wait about a minute for the primer or moisturizer to dry.
  9. Always wear your concealer before your wear your foundation. Usually when you apply concealer, you won’t need much foundation.
  10. Control oily skin by using matte foundation. If you have dry skin, try a hydrating formulation.
  11. All powders — pressed, wet-to-dry, or loose—are great for finishing up your look. Go for the kind that sits well with your skin type, the loose powder being the lightest and wet-to-dry being the heaviest.
  12. Go for yellow-based powder (no pink tones) for the most natural look. Anything to reddish will make you look flushed.
  13. Here’s a tip for applying lose powder properly: Hold the large powder puff over the powder container, so that there is no chance of spillage. Then, tip the powder container upside down. Shake off excess powder and then lightly press the puff to your face. Finally, use a large brush to brush off the excess powder from your face.
  14. If you have oily skin, powder can help keep shineniness at bay.
  15. One rule of thumb when using concealer and foundation is to blend, blend, blend! You must make sure you blend your under-eye areas seamlessly with the rest of your face; your neck should likewise “blend” with the foundation on your face. For a complete and seamless appearance, you could apply foundation near your hairline and ears, if needed.
  16. Keep yellow eye shadow handy: You can apply it with your concealer or foundation to conceal dark circles under your eyes.
  17. Avoid cakes or fills in the wrinkles or lines beneath your eyes when you apply foundation. The best way to avoid this is to regular eye cream to your facial regimen.
  18. Clean brushes and a clean face are essential for the best effect from your makeup. Make sure to clean your applicators and brushes at least every other day to keep them in top shape.
  19. The proper order for powder application is: After applying foundation and before putting on your eye makeup.
  20. Prevent your foundation or powder from clumpling by keeping it in a cool dry place. Avoid storing it in the bathroom, whether humidity can cause it to cake.

5 Simple Summer Makeup Tips

Summer’s official kicked in, as have the climbing temperatures. This can mean horrors for our makeup regimen, especially since the summer heat brings with it a whole load of problems for your cosmetics. Be armed with the right techniques, so that your makeup this season won’t melt, but rather last.

  1. Get sun protection for your face. Make sure you wear a lightweight, preferably oil-free sunscreen of at least 30 SPF, on your face. Summer temperatures and hot sunlight can wreak havoc on your skin. Even if your foundation or moisturizer comes with sunscreen, never skip putting on actual sun protection so that your skin is completely protected.
  2. Apply a primer before your makeup. Primers help keep the oil levels on your face at bay. They also help keep your concealer and foundation on for much longer. Apply primer after you’ve cleansed your face, and before you put on your concealer. Doing so will ensure your base makeup lasts longer, even after breaking a sweat.
  3. Lighten up on the makeup. Summer’s trendy fashions are usually light and airy, and your makeup should be the same. Say goodbye to the dark eyeshadow and heavy mascara or lashes. Go for light, natural shades on your eyes, and apply a brown instead of black eyeliner, just to make your eyes “pop” a bit. Go for a light colored lip tint; avoid sultry, wet-effect lipsticks for now.
  4. Condition your lips. Remember to apply lip protection such as a lip balm, regularly throughout the summer. In the morning, apply lip protection with SPF, a few minutes before you put on your full makeup. At night, do the same after you’ve cleansed your face.
  5. Wash off your makeup completely. There’s nothing that can ruin your skin more quickly than makeup residue that’s left on your face after a long day. Before you go to bed, make sure you’ve cleansed your face with makeup remover, a good cleanser, toner and cold cream. Make sure you still moisturize your skin after cleansing, so that it won’t lose its suppleness, especially after you’ve been wearing makeup the whole day.

As we enter 2012, more people than ever are becoming aware of the image they project to the outside world. Sexy, intense, bold, beautiful, powerful, natural – whatever your image is, are you aware of it?

Whenever you walk into a room, every eye upon you is a camera. CLICK! The image you exude is communicated the instant people see you. The challenge is to inform these eyes that behold you, to receive the impression you want them to, long before you open your gorgeous mouth to speak. What better time than the new year to take stock of your image.

Why is it so important to create the image of yourself you want others to see? To create a curiosity, a receptiveness from others that is wonderfully positive. To fully know and understand who you are and to project this self can be a soul searching experience. ??????? Most of us are a superb mixture of wondrous qualities. One thing you can be sure of however, and that is that you are unique. There is no one quite like you.

The issue of image has been a long life interest to me. I have seen perfectly beautiful, well-manicured men and women who have the perfect “first impression”, destroy it through their behavior. On the other hand, I have seen many people whose true natural selves project a charm and warmth that keeps you wanting more. I look forward to addressing this topic further on this blog.

Do The Tangerine Tango

It is interesting to think that “happiness can be a color” but it’s true.

TANGERINEThink about Gray… what happens in your brain… “ugh… gray… gray skies, gray pallor, gray ashes.” Now… think ORANGE! And not just any orange, but the newest color of the design season… “TANGERINE TANGO!” nice how just the thought brings you smiles! I love orange painted toe nails in the summer time because looking down at dancing toes brings joy to every step.

Winter Skin Care Tips

It was an exquisitely beautiful day in Las Vegas day and in a couple hours I was headed for New York. Before leaving for the airport, as I was walking my dog Lola, I wondered, “Why is it always a perfect day when we are headed for the coldest city on earth?”

Perfect weather days fill my soul with joy, but my life’s ritual is to travel to the east coast three or four times a year and I have had to figure out how to keep my skin healthy, hydrated and moisturized within the changing climates desert to stormy.

The following tried and true tips are out of my personal makeup bag of travel tricks for winter skin care tips:

EXFOLLIATE!

The night before you travel, before you bathe, exfoliate your skin. Avoid products with strong ingredients; opting instead for natural moisturizing products such as oatmeal, which has anti inflammatory properties, or a sea-salt or my favorite sugar scrub for gentle skin smoothing.

If you must have your daily relaxing hot-soak in the tub, try to slightly reduce the temperature (very hot water dries out your skin) and use an almond oil, milk or Epsom salts to soften the water and help with aches and pains. Lavender oil is divine and will send you into a blissful rest. Afterword, your skin and your spirit will feel restored and rejuvenated.

MOISTURIZE! MOISTURIZE! MOISTURIZE!

Moisturizer is the key to maintaining soft supple skin throughout the winter. Use moisturizers that utilize the hydrating properties appropriate for your personal skin type. They should be applied within a minute from your shower or bathing in order to trap important water in the epidermis and reduce itching and dryness.

“African Oil” is my secret weapon which I buy at the drug store and is a combination of seven natural oils. I find this has become a miracle in dealing with the brutal cold winters of New York when my skin is dry and parched. Alone, or as a mix with other body lotion, it is simply great oil.

Three other words to remember: Sunscreen, always! (Yes, even in the winter). Water, inside and out to help eliminate dryness and prevent rashes and itchiness. Vitamins… take your Vitamins!

Cozy in and have fun with your friends… it’s winter!

How to Clean Makeup Brushes

If you were to examine your make-up brushes under a microscope, you’d be quite surprised (and likely a little disturbed) by the visual. In addition to old make-up and dead skin cells, your brushes harbor pore-clogging dirt, bacteria and oils. The good news is there’s a simple, inexpensive solution!

Frequent washing of your make-up brushes can keep them (and subsequently your skin) clean, healthy and soft for a long time to come. Below are some tips and pointers from Judith on proper brush care.

How often should I clean my make-up brushes?

In a perfect world…everyday, but none of us live in a perfect world so here are a few basic guidelines:

  • Foundation Brushes – 1x per weekip-powder-brush
  • Powder and Bronzing Brushes – 1x per week
  • Blush Brushes – 1x per week
  • Eyeshadow Brushes – minimum every 3-4 days

How do I clean my make-up brushes?ip-face-brush

  • Step 1: With the brush pointing downward, wet just the hairs under a faucet with warm water with the hairs pointing downwards to prevent water from entering the handle.
  • Step 2: Using a mild shampoo, liquid hand soap, or specially formulated brush soap, massage the soap with your fingers and apply to the hairs from the base to hair tip. With the brush pointing downward, gently squeeze the hairs beginning at the base and moving toward the hair tips over; repeat, adding a little water each time until the water runs clear.
  • Step 3: After the brush is rinsed, brush it slightly while reshaping the brush on a clean paper towel and lay it to dry.
  • Step 4: Let brushes dry completely before using. Dry time will depend on size and density of the brush.

Keeping your make-up brushes in good condition by washing frequently will provide you with years of beautiful makeup application!

A Time to Give Thanks

A few thoughts to share on why Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.

Even though there is much uncertainty in the world today each and every one of us can look inward to see the everyday blessings we encounter on a daily basis. These are certainties we can count on!

I’m now in New York City visiting with my family. (At least a part of them, the other part is in New Orleans.) My daughter Melissa and son-in-law Steve, and two of the most precious grandchildren a Gramma could ask for…I’M GRATEFUL.

My grandson just had a bit of minor surgery, but surgery nonetheless, and is doing great…I’M GRATEFUL!

I’m writing this note with my soul mates by my side. My husband and my doggy Lola. We are healthy and happy…I’M GRATEFUL!!

We will be having our Thanksgiving feast in upstate New York with many friends and family members…I’M GRATEFUL!!

I have a wonderful business and very special people I work with every day that makes our days productive and fulfilling…I’M GRATEFUL!!

I have so many friends, customers and fans that love what we do and I can help every day with what they need…I’M GRATEFUL.

Count your blessings. There is little we can do about the outside world, but we can be still and appreciative in our inside world and everyday joys…BE GRATEFUL!

Judith Sits Down with Alana Lee, Miss Nevada 2011 (Part 2)

Judith August, Founder Judith August Cosmetics, recently spent some time with Alana Lee, Miss Nevada 2011. She asked Alana about her Miss Nevada experience and how she looks so good on and off the stage. This is part two of a two-part interview.

I had lunch with the talented and adorable Alana Lee, Miss Nevada 2011, last week and she looked smashing as ever. Poor girl is simply flawless: so you can imagine my surprise when she asked me what to do about the dark circles under her eyes! I was almost stuck for an answer but if I were to be super picky I told her about our Orange Masking Crème and how it could even get rid of more of the dark under her eyes and is also is a great item to put in her make-up bag for traveling to her BIG EVENT.

She is now using a light under eye concealer followed by her skin matched foundation. It is just fine…but, to be even finer, I would prefer a peachy orangey, pinky, color that are the undertones of Orange Mashing Crème. Alana has a light olive complexion and a warmer under eye concealer might be a bit better for her. Orange Masking Crème is also a great cover-up for bruises and you never know if something might happen right before she goes on stage… Better be safe than sorry.

Judith: Pageant hair isn’t what it used to be. How did you choose your hairstyle?

Alana: Honestly, my hairstyle has evolved quite a bit over the past two years. I started with long, blond hair to short, brown hair and am now happy with my medium-length blond hair. I feel like hair makes or breaks a person’s image. Before deciding what to do with your hair you should decide what specific qualities or characteristics you are hoping to convey to others through your image, and then choose a hair cut and style that helps you accomplish that objective.

Judith: Head shots. Do you prefer natural or glitzy?

Alana: I prefer a happy medium. I don’t like to have the over-the-top glitzy look or the overly casual photo either. I just like to look like the best version of Alana Lee I can. Depending on what the headshot is being used for, certain qualifications may change. I have different headshots I use for professional endeavors, political events and pageant publications. It all depends on the audience, venue and use of the photo.

Judith: Imagine spending a Saturday in a city where no one knows who you are. How do you dress and wear your hair and makeup when no one is looking?

Alana: I usually wear dressy-casual types of outfits. Most of the time that entails a nice pair of jeans with a cute top, heels and a pair of earrings. I round-brush my hair while blow-drying, so my hair has a loose curl to it and my make-up is done to the nines. No false eyelashes, but I still like to feel pretty when I’m casual!

Judith: Tell us when we can tune in to see you compete for the Miss America Title?

Alana: If you’re in Las Vegas during January 10-14, you should come watch the pageant at Planet Hollywood Casino! If that’s not an option, viewers can tune in to ABC on January 14, 2012 to see the events unfold. It’s thrilling any way you watch it, but the excitement at the LIVE show is tangible!

Judith: When were you crowned Miss Nevada?

Alana: On Saturday July 2, 2011

Judith: When your name was announced as winner how did you feel? Did you cry?

MissNevadaCrowningAlana: Did I cry? Absolutely! I was crying before they even called my name. It seems so cliché but in that moment I had a dream come true. I had been working towards this goal for nearly 2 years at that point. I wasn’t crying because I won a pageant, I was crying because I had accomplished something that required a lot of sacrifice, work and dedication.

Judith: What do you remember most from the night you captured the title?

Alana: I just remember a feeling of disbelief. Thousands of girls compete each year for the chance to become “Miss State” and to participate in the Miss America Pageant. What are the chances that I would be one of the lucky 53 selected to live her dream in this capacity? It was mind boggling to me.

Judith: Tell us about the gown you wore that evening and why you chose that particular style.

Alana: My state gown was a tightly-fitted, halter top, sky-blue gown. I bought it at the Miss America Trunk show in January for less than $200! It wasn’t the most pricey gown out there, but I loved it! I have found that halter-top dresses that gather tightly below the bust are the most flattering dress design for my body, and they move nicely when I walk.

Judith: The walk! Tell us about the pageant walk. Do you have any tips on mastering it?

Alana: Feel confident! Nothing resonates as well as confidence when you’re onstage, regardless of the phase of competition. It’s important to be smooth in your movements and complete the walking pattern as directed, but I feel confidence and a positive mentality affect your entire performance, including “the walk”.

Judith: Did you do your own make-up for the evening?

Alana: I did. I have a wonderful friend named Kelli Miller who has taught me everything I know about make-up. It’s priceless knowledge but the actual make-up comes with a price tag unfortunately! Thank goodness for sponsors who continue to help me afford these expenses.

Judith: What make-up tips can you give us that will help us to stand out from the crowd? You definitely did!

Alana: Thank you! I don’t know if I’m as qualified as some others on this topic, but I’ll share one tip with you. I have grown to love the use of bronzer in the past few years. Whether you’re on-stage, at an event or just at the park, applying the right amounts of bronzer to the right parts of your face (depending on your face shape) can make a world of difference. I have an oval shaped face so I make sure to lightly bronze the sides and end of my nose, my chin, top of my cheek bones, under my jaw and near my hairline on my forehead. I can’t explain in technical terms how this makes me look better like a professional could, but I can promise it makes or breaks my look!

Judith: Is there a tip to keep your make-up, concealers from wearing off on your clothes?

Alana: When I do anything on-stage or attend an event for a lengthy period of time I make sure to lightly (and briefly!) hairspray my face. This sounds crazy, but when done right, the hairspray sets the make-up in place without leaving any sticky residue. Surprisingly, I have never had any struggles with my skin as a result of doing this. However, I think people should test this out before it’s call time!

Then, one unsuspecting day you pass by your trusted friend, the bathroom mirror, and take a quick glance, then another glance. What in the world is happening! A feeling of shocked surprise comes over you. Where did these dark circles under my eyes come from? What are these fine lines? I’m so dry. This is not me.

These were the comments from my niece Michelle, when I was in New York for our traditional Thanksgiving dinner. The joys of time spent with family was more delicious than turkey, stuffing, and all the trimmings. But, it never fails. The girls are always talking make-up, no matter what the occasion and when “Aunt Judith” works in the area of concealing cosmetics, all cousins, aunts and nieces ask advise.

Michelle was devastated. Last year I didn’t have this, she complained. These dark circles just appeared the other day. How can I make them disappear?

Unfortunately, when I travel to see family, I never take along my full line of corrective cosmetics. I never think of it. But Michelle was really upset. How can you not bring all your foundations and concealers with you, she cried. What kind of aunt are you! I need you!

So, off we went to the local drug store seeking the best concealer for her. There were so many choices, and we spent a lot of time but, we did find something that would work until I was able to send her what I thought was the perfect concealer.

Michelle will never forget her “first time”. I was there to help. So for me, not only was I grateful for this Thanksgiving, for all the love and joys of family, but grateful I was there for her first time!

I was interviewed the other day by a reporter. In addition to talking about my corrective cosmetics, she asked a provocative question. She wanted to know what I had learned about life vis-a- vis my business over the years. This brought to mind something I had not thought about for years. It is what I call “Invisible Threads” and it reminded me why I do what I do.

Since I founded Judith August Cosmetic Solutions more than 20 years ago, women from all over the world have reached out to let me know how their lives have been affected by their cosmetic challenges. Some suffer from serious conditions like birthmarks that dramatically affected their self esteem, while others simply wanted to improve their appearance by camouflaging minor flaws like under eye circles….just something simple that makes them feel better.

The amazing thing is no matter where these women were from, and I’ve met thousands from almost every continent, we all had common “Invisible Threads” that connected us. Our desire is to be and do our best, not only for ourselves, but for those in our lives who we love and who count on us.

I feel so grateful that I have many many sisters through out the world!

Last month I described the amazing wedding I attended at Bullock Wilshire, promising to get back with you on the charming young couple and more about the event…so, here we go!

First, the darling groom, that Jenny describes as “seven year stand-up comedian, working as a screen writer…. sitting down!!!” couldn’t have been more loving and adorable. The ceremony, written and directed by the two of them, was a very unique and special channeling of the couple’s philosophy on style and substance. But, let’s get to the important part….THE FOOD!!!

You see, our lovely bride made her own wedding cake and designed her wedding menu, trusting the actual catering to a second company…( a girl has to have a moment free from the kitchen when she’s in “the white dress “ mode!) The menu was created by her personal enterprise, SPORK FOODS, a Los Angeles based Gourmet Vegan Food Company. This enterprise is owned and operated by Jenny and her sister Heather Goldberg.

The philosophy of their, innovative cuisine emphasizes organic, local and seasonal ingredients. They offer Organic Vegan cooking classes, on and off line, home healthy eating consultations, and private cooking parties. We were all lucky enough to taste and learn all about this popular cuisine at the wedding.

Protect Your Skin From UV Rays

I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July weekend! I know I did. As I’m sure everyone had some fun in the sun, I want to take a moment to stress the importance of protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. You’ve heard it a million times, but there is a good reason for this unrelenting repetition.

fun_in_the_sunIn the 60’s & 70’s, sun reflectors ran ramped on the beaches, and at pools. Everyone was blissfully unaware the havoc sun-kissed tans had on their skin. Then as the years went by, numerous articles were released, aimed at educating the public on the dangers of the UV radiation, including serious premature aging and skin cancer. Marketers soon after came out with a lotion intended to block skin from the harmful rays. Of course, we all know this now as sunscreen. Although this was a wonderful advance, I remember most being unwilling to slather thick lotion in the hot sun, all while giving up their gorgeous tan. However the past ten years or so, popular magazines and brands have launched campaigns, pushing consumers to get serious about protecting their skin from sun damage.

I was always diligent about covering my skin in the sun, even when I was younger. But as I realized a few years back, sometimes that is not enough. I discovered I had skin cancer on my nose, most likely, as my doctor pointed out, from sun exposure while driving. I see now more than ever how important it is to wear sunscreen whenever your skin has any contact with UV rays. Even if it’s just a walk around the block. I was lucky the cancer I had was easily treatable, but not everyone is that fortunate. Doctors recommend to regularly check your skin. Pay attention to odd freckles, moles, and growths on your skin, and consult your doctor if you notice any changes. For example, a change in a mole can indicate potential skin cancer. Early detection is definitely key!

What used to be streaky, orange, and smelly, is now easy applicable product, providing a bronzed color. Just remember to exfoliate your skin before application, and to wash those hands after, and you are ready to debut your beautiful glow, cancer free! A Walk Down Memory Lane

Last weekend I had an “out of body” experience.

My husband and I attended the wedding of the son of my “forever friend”, Wilma. What a special event it was! Jeremy and Jenny got married. A perfect match! More about this delicious couple later.

The wedding took place at one of Los Angeles “Historic Landmarks”. It was built somewhere between 1920 or 30 in the grand style of Art Deco., as a department store, called BULLOCKS WILSHIRE. It is now a Law School (what a difference a day makes!) The wedding and reception was held in the Law Library which is a venue that is now available for outside events. It used to be The Better Dress Department!!!

As I opened the door to this magnificent structure, through the parking lot and beautiful gardens, I flashed back to another time and another place.

BULLOCKS WILSHIRE, in its heyday, was the Crème De La Crème of department stores where the “ladies who lunch” came every day, dressed to the nines, browsing, shopping, and most of all lunching in its famous Tea Room. It was truly an event. They came with friends and grandchildren all dressed up cause it was an occasion!

The gentlemen who ran the elevators wore colorful uniforms and white gloves (I’ll never forget those white gloves!) and with impeccable manners, escorted you into the elevators opening the doors at each floor announcing, floor #1, lingerie, floor #2 shoes, floor #3 better dress and so forth. They went all the way up to floor #6 THE TEA ROOM.

One of the attractions at THE TEA ROOM, was informal modeling of the latest fashions. This was my very first modeling job…EVER! I was the teen-age model who dashed about showing off everything from swimsuits to prom dresses. I was the baby working with some of the most glamorous and chic “older” models in town. They were probably 22 to 30 years old but there I was among them, doing my thing and learning the first phase of “the business”.

What a glorious moment in time it was. The peak of gentility and grace. Today its Wal-Mart, and TJ Max with few still struggling to maintain the allure.

SEGWAY TWENTY FIVE YEARS LATER, I once again walked into the magnificent store as the prodigy of the Make-Up Guru of Beverly Hills, Aida Grey. Ms, Grey was my mentor. She had trained me in the cosmetic business starting at 18 years old and I learned and learned in-between modeling jobs. Many years later I became The Training Director for her company. It was at this time that I once again entered the Art Deco walls of BULLOCKS WILSHIRE. This time as Trainer and Manager of the Aida Grey Cosmetic Studio that was housed in the store’s Beauty Salon. I went to THE TEA ROOM FOR LUNCH.

Can you believe that the maître d’, a charming man with a high dark haired pompadour, and polished demeanor seated me? He was still seating people twenty five years later. Looking at me intently he said “I remember you! You were one of “the girls” modeling here years ago when the Tea Room was at its height of popularity and all “the ladies who lunch” came every week to view the latest fashions. I was startled, but pleased that he had remembered all these years later and that I was a part of the history of this stellar store.

The building is no longer BULLOCKS WILSHIRE but as I walked into The Grand Hall and the wedding of Jenny and Jeremy I was transformed to another very special time in my life and truly had an “out of body” experience. A flash-back in my history.

Celebrating Mom!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

We love this time of year here at Judith August Cosmetics, because we get to celebrate the most special type of woman, Mom, Mommy, Mother, Madre, Mamma, etc. Mother’s Day is filled with flowers, pampering, yummy brunches, and of course giving thanks to the woman who provided unconditional love to you since the day you were born. She cradled you as an infant during 4am feedings, cheered you on during soccer games, put up with a door slam or two during those tumultuous teenage years, and yet, through it all, love prevails. There are less than few people in our lives who we can say that about.

To honor all types of motherly relationships, we wanted to share other Mom stories and invite you to share your own.

My mom and I were always close growing up, but now that I am a mother, I can see clearly everything she taught me. My mom was always the frugal one when it came to money, and who put down the ground rules instilling the dos and donts with us. Then through High School she was the ‘cool’ mom who brought us lunch, homemade cookies, was at every Volleyball game, Basketball game and Track meet.

As I’ve gotten older, she has become not only a ‘cooler’ mom, but my friend. We have long talks, go shopping together and she still never misses a beat telling me when I shouldn’t be doing something, even at my age. I don’t know how she handled two kids by the age of twenty-three and survived the teenage years with us.

I still look to my mom for guidance and she is always there when the emotions are high and patience is low. She is the best Mom, friend and ‘Granna’ I could ever ask for. She deserves more than a brunch or flowers for all she has done and continues to do. Thanks Mom!

I grew up with a mom who could do it all. She was loving, supportive, basically ran the household, and had a thriving career for which she worked hard to achieve. In all aspects of her life, she was successful.

From an early age, my mom set high standards for herself. She aspired to be completely independent, by doing what she loved to do. As the first born, I can recall her younger days, before she grew into the strong woman most people remember her being. I watched her attend grad school classes, waitress at night, and substitute teach during the day, all while running our family. And by the time I was about 8 years old, her hard work and networking paid off, and she was offered her dream job.

I remember there being no other option for my mom than to get what she wanted out of life. And now I am in my mid-twenties, I find myself in the exact same position. Working towards my own thriving career and waitress on the side for extra money. And like my mom, there is no other option for me. It never occurs for me to be any other way, because this is what I am supposed to be doing, and I have always known that. Which attests to how strong her influence on me has been.

When I have children, I know I will try to infuse those same hard-working, independent values my mom installed within me. I should mention my mom passed away ten years ago, when I was fifteen, unexpectedly from brain cancer. I miss her everyday, but I sleep soundly knowing I am working towards achieving everything she wanted for me out of life: an education, independence, a career doing what I love to do, and most importantly (and I’m throwing out a classic here) treating others as I would want to be treated. I live my life solely to honor my beautiful mother, in hopes I am making her proud. But, of course, if I wasn’t she’d love me anyway, because that’s what moms do!

HEALTHY GLOW

There are distinct moments in a woman’s life, where we can recall, at the drop of a hat, the time we felt the most beautiful. A moment where every issue we normally analyze each time we brave the mirror, has vanished. And we feel completely natural, and one hundred percent ourselves. This is a moment we never forget.

As women, we tend to be hard on ourselves when it comes to appearance. Of course one can argue society practically demands for such harshness, or perfection. But that minimally softens the blows. Because when those laugh lines begin to appear, or we get yet another blemish smack dab on our nose, nothing stops us from feeling aggravated towards our imperfections.

Then that day magical day arrives, where everything aligns. Your skin looks flawless, hair that stays in perfect position, and an outfit that hugs your curves just right. You feel light on your feet, and like you can take on the world. Because it becomes more than simply “looking” great, but feeling great. And exuding the strength and confidence that resides in us all.

We see many of these type moments on TV, or in movies. A character from Sex in the City comes to mind. In Season Five, Miranda battles insecurities about her “post-baby” body. Normally very slender, having a baby left her with extra pounds around her belly and thighs. We watch as she eats junk food while simultaneously commenting how “fat” she is. We see her feel conscious after a man rudely draws attention to her “large” bottom. And eventually attend weight-watchers. We feel her pain. We have been there.

Then the episode comes where Miranda, who had been feeling particularly low, haphazardly tries on her “skinny jeans”. The type of jeans, according to Carrie Bradshaw, all woman keep in their closet in the hope the will one day fit again. And as that zipper moves up without resistance, so does her confidence. And she has her moment. The show continues on with Miranda glowing, and unmistakably confident. But towards the end of the show, as Miranda casually flirts with a group of men, Carrie smartly points out, the skinny jean isn’t just a “state of behind“, but a “state of mind“.

I love this episode, because it not only reminds us we are not alone in the struggle of appearance, but also because is inspiring to be see how important feeling good about ourselves is to our mental health. That day which stands out in your mind as one where your felt the most beautiful, isn’t solely because you thought you looked great on the outside, but it is because you looked great on the inside as well.

Concealer Makeup Tips and Advice

I like to think of getting older as entering “The Elegant Years,” and judging by the responses we got from our survey, those years are on many of your minds as well. I am happy to answer many of the questions I received and grateful that so many of you took the time to communicate with me. What a joy to meet you!

More than half of my audience was interested in learning how to use concealer makeup to fill in soft lines, alleviate wrinkles and hide veins. Today I talk about a simple trick that will help you with these issues.

Survey Question: “I am 52; what do you recommend for a line concealer that goes under foundation? One that actually fills in and softens the lines around the lips, and helps keep my lipstick from running.”

Answer: It’s easy! Use the Everything Pencil that is one shade lighter than your foundation; you can draw the lines away. Gently press into the lines as if you are applying putty. Pat and blend, followed with your foundation which will give you the softening effect you are looking for.

Survey Question: “Do you have a water resistant makeup product that I can use to cover up spider veins when I am in my water aerobics class?”

Answer: Once again – the Everything Pencil to the rescue! You can draw away those pesky veins easily. Simply use your pencil to erase away! Since every part of the body is a different color, you may need to blend a couple of pencils together in order to achieve the perfect match. Since I have very light skin, I use the Ultra Light Everything Pencil and mix a slight amount of Pure Beige to get my perfect color. See what works for you.

It looks like we are all on the same wave length. I am in the midst of developing a new product that will address these issues and will be a great companion to the Everything Pencil. Stay tuned and remember “Everybody’s got something to hide!”

Wants and Wishes

I love coming up with ideas for new products and new ways to use cosmetics to make women feel more beautiful. But even more than that, I love hearing from the women who buy my products about /their/ ideas. No one knows better than you what you really want, so I recently conducted a survey of my customers to ask, “What is on your cosmetics wish list?”

I was delighted and a little overwhelmed by the responses! So many of you sent in your suggestions and quite a few of you had questions, too. So over the next several months, I will be sharing those ideas and answering your questions here in my blog.
